Putting Green Guide
Everything you need to know about building a backyard putting green — construction, stimp speeds, infill, base shaping, fringe, rough, and maintenance.
What Makes a Great Putting Green?
True Roll
Engineered turf + proper infill = smooth, consistent ball roll.
Stimp Control
We dial in 10–12 stimp speeds using specialized infill.
Base Shaping
Breaks, tiers, and contours are sculpted into the stone base.
Fringe & Rough
Short‑game practice zones for chips, flops, and bump‑and‑runs.
This diagram shows the full system: putting turf → infill → compacted stone base → shaping layer → subgrade. Breaks and contours are created during the shaping stage.
Stimp Speed & Infill
Stimp Speed
Our greens roll between 10–12 stimp, matching private‑club speeds. We adjust speed by controlling infill depth and brushing direction.
Infill Type
Putting greens require specialized infill to control:
- Ball roll speed
- Surface firmness
- Consistency across the green
This diagram shows how the stone base is sculpted to create realistic putting contours before turf is installed.
Fringe, Rough & Short‑Game Zones
Fringe Turf
Perfect for bump‑and‑runs and controlled chip shots.
Rough Turf
Ideal for flop shots and higher‑lofted practice.
